Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed announced an interim administration for Tigray, giving it six months to prepare for regional elections. The announcement followed a September offensive by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front and six allied armed groups, whose forces were subsequently forced to retreat. The fighting has renewed concerns about regional instability and a possible confrontation between Ethiopia and neighboring Eritrea. Ethiopia has accused Eritrea of supporting the TPLF offensive. Asmara has denied the charges, calling it a pretext by Addis Ababa to attack. There have been reports of troop movements near their shared border. Analysts say that a conflict between the two countries could disrupt Red Sea shipping, threaten regional trade, and deepen instability across the Horn of Africa, making diplomacy strategically urgent.
