Ethiopia has officially entered the race to host the 2027 UN Climate Summit (COP32) in its capital, Addis Ababa, setting up a competition with Nigeria for the coveted hosting rights. This bid highlights Ethiopia’s ambition to play a central role in global climate negotiations and showcase its own environmental credentials. Ethiopian President Taye Atske Selassie said the country has the facilities and connectivity to manage the high-profile event, which attracts nearly 200 nations annually. The nation has already positioned itself as a green leader by banning the import of non-electric cars and generating all its power from renewable sources since 2022. The final decision rests with the UN’s Africa regional group, which must unanimously select a host.
