Seven Ethiopian armed groups based in six of the country’s 12 regions have announced a coalition called the Alliance for Survival. The coalition’s goal is to remove Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s government and establish a transitional administration. The alliance includes Fano in Amhara, the Oromo Liberation Army, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, and smaller groups based in Ogaden, Afar, and Benishangul-Gumuz. The groups accuse the government of presiding over conflict, destruction, and poverty, warning that the country risks breaking apart. The announcement follows years of fighting in Oromia and Amhara and renewed friction in Tigray, which was the site of a devastating civil war between 2020 and 2022. It also comes amid reports of a separate alignment between the TPLF and the Eritrea government.
