Ethiopia’s Timket celebration

Hundreds of thousands of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians poured into streets, churches, and lakesides this week to celebrate Timket, the vibrant festival marking the baptism of Jesus in the River Jordan. In communities like Batu, on the shores of Lake Dambal in Oromia, priests solemnly accompanied sacred replicas of the Ark of the Covenant, known as tabots, in colorful public processions. These were accompanied by rhythmic drumming, spiritual chants, and devout worshippers, creating a profoundly moving atmosphere. After gathering the tabots, clergy led heartfelt prayer ceremonies for massive crowds. Meanwhile, in Addis Ababa, the festivities culminated in a symbolic baptism ritual, underscoring the festival’s spiritual core. Together, the rituals transformed Timket into a powerful display of faith, community, and cultural continuity across Ethiopia.
