Fatoumata Diawara Channels Pain Into Music

Malian singer-songwriter Fatoumata Diawara has released her new album Massa, a deeply personal work that channels themes of faith, family tension, motherhood, and belonging into a genre-spanning sound shaped by funk, desert blues, and Malian folk traditions. The record reflects Diawara’s complex relationship with her large polygamous family, the grief of losing her father—her closest confidant—and the deliberate distance she has placed between herself and those connections by retreating to a secluded home in the Italian mountains. Despite her commanding stage presence, Diawara describes herself as intensely private offstage. She insists on writing in Bambara, her native language, as both a cultural statement and an act of resistance against the homogenizing trends she observes among a younger generation of African artists converging on identical sounds.
