Five Artists, Five Nations: taking to the Road to Find Southern Africa’s Hidden Stories

Celebrating Africa’s rich heritage through vivid art reflecting its diverse cultures and traditions.
Zimbabwean art historian Barnabas Ticha Muvhuti embarked on a road trip through Botswana, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Namibia, Mozambique, and Zambia, seeking hidden stories about artists and their creative environments. This journey, made possible through a writing fellowship with the Arak Collection, led to the publication of his book Chronicles of the Road: Five Nations, Five Artists. The book captures Muvhuti’s encounters with artists in their studios, shedding light on voices often overlooked in academic and literary circles. As a scholar of southern African cultures and intellectual histories, Muvhuti’s work brings fresh perspectives to African art and history.
