Sudan’s brutal war, ongoing since April 2023, has become one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, with over 150,000 dead and 14 million displaced. What began as a power struggle between the army and paramilitary forces has morphed into a proxy war, with foreign powers, including Egypt, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE, backing opposing sides of the conflict. These external entanglements have escalated the violence and undermined peace efforts. The African Union, despite its “African solutions” mantra, has been notably absent. Nevertheless, experts argue that only a unified regional diplomatic push—centered on neutrality, accountability, and human rights—can end the crisis. Without genuine commitment from both African and global actors, Sudan risks even deeper chaos.
