Former Ethiopian Leader Urges Inclusion in Red Sea Security Talks

Source: Pulse of Africa·Edited by Editor TO·

Former Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Dessalegn has said that Ethiopia must be included in regional discussions on Red Sea security to build lasting stability in the Horn of Africa. Speaking to Pulse of Africa, he argued that the country’s population, strategic position, and regional influence make its participation essential. Excluding Ethiopia, he warned, would weaken efforts to create a sustainable security framework. Dessalegn also linked national sovereignty to economic strength, urging African nations to prioritize agriculture, industry, and energy production while relying on homegrown resources rather than outside support. He clarified that economic independence does not mean isolation from international cooperation. Dessalegn’s position gives renewed emphasis to Ethiopia’s demand for a voice in regional security decisions, while suggesting that durable influence will also depend on stronger productive capacity at home.
