Four African Mations Secure Seats on UN Rights Council

By POA·Edited by Editor TO·

Zambia, Nigeria, Ghana, and Burundi have secured three-year terms on the United Nations Human Rights Council, beginning January 1, 2027. The four countries were elected alongside 11 other nations to the council’s 47-member body, which monitors human rights conditions and makes recommendations to governments. Their election gives the four governments a formal platform to influence international discussions on civil liberties, accountability, and human rights protection. Zambian President Hakainde Hichilema welcomed the result as recognition of his country’s commitments, while Nigerian officials highlighted international confidence in their government’s stated human rights objectives. However, membership also brings scrutiny: the countries’ domestic records may attract greater attention as they participate in reviews and deliberations concerning other states.
