France and Algeria have agreed to resume high-level security cooperation during French Interior Minister Laurent Nuñez’s visit to Algiers, marking the first thaw in diplomatic relations strained since 2024. Relations between the two sides deteriorated after Paris officially backed Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara, directly opposing Algeria’s support for the pro-independence Polisario Front in the disputed territory. The renewed partnership will cover judicial cooperation, policing, and intelligence sharing. Notably, Algeria has agreed to readmit its nationals living irregularly in France—something it had opposed for months. Senior security officials from both nations attended talks expected to address drug trafficking and counterterrorism, particularly vital given Algeria’s borders with junta-ruled Niger and Mali, both of which are experiencing severe jihadist violence.
