Gabon has lifted an eight-month suspension of social media platforms, reversing a restriction that sparked widespread criticism from citizens and opposition figures. Authorities had justified the measure by arguing that online content was intensifying conflict and deepening divisions. The restrictions affected popular platforms including Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, which many young Gabonese use for entertainment, communication, and business. Some users circumvented the ban through virtual private networks. The suspension came as President Brice Oligui Nguema faced unrest, including strikes by teachers and civil servants over pay and working conditions. Nguema, who won more than 90% of the vote in last year’s election after ending decades of Bongo family rule, had pledged to reform the oil- and timber-rich country.
