Gabon will hold a referendum on November 16, a move that has sparked mixed reactions from different parts of the country. If passed, the proposed changes would allow military leader General Brice Clotaire Oligui Nguema to run for president, abolish the post of prime minister, and create a vice president role. Critics of the proposed constitution argue that the new charter grants excessive powers to the president. However, its supporters claim it will restore civilian rule and introduce term limits. Meanwhile, some citizens feel the referendum is being rushed and that the government should have taken longer to educate the country’s citizens before calling for a referendum. Opposition parties are also concerned that Nguema has not fulfilled his promise to separate military and political roles, given the charter leaves room for him to contest for president.
