Gambian lawmakers have struck down a controversial draft constitution that would have introduced presidential term limits but also allowed President Adama Barrow a fresh start—potentially extending his rule beyond 2027. The proposed law capped presidencies at two five-year terms but controversially exempted the sitting president’s previous terms from counting. With 35 votes against and only 21 in favor—falling short of the 44 needed—the bill was rejected. Barrow, who initially pledged to serve only three years after his 2016 win, already extended his stay with a 2021 re-election. Critics say the draft offers too much leeway for Barrow. Meanwhile, a stricter 2020 version was dismissed for placing too many restrictions on the president. Lawmakers now call for deeper consultation and reform.
