The Gates Foundation has committed at least $1 billion over the next two years to expand access to artificial intelligence, particularly in communities that have been underserved by the technology revolution. Its 2026 Goalkeepers Report warns that AI could deepen global inequality because the systems powering many tools are trained on data that poorly represents large parts of the world. The report notes that more than 90% of the data used to train early large language models came from English-language sources, limiting their effectiveness in many other languages and local contexts. Consequently, the foundation plans to direct funding to education, healthcare, agriculture, and digital infrastructure, including datasets for underrepresented languages. The initiative is expected to help Africa build AI tools around local data, while empowering governments, workers, and developers to help shape those tools.
