Ghana has become one of the few African countries to embed artificial intelligence and coding into basic education, introducing the subjects from kindergarten through junior high school. Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu unveiled the overhaul as part of a “Smart Start” curriculum also incorporating electronics, technical training, and civic education. Officials say the reform aims to prepare children for a technology-driven economy and ensure Africa isn’t left behind in the global digital transition. Students have welcomed the reforms, saying AI tools can improve independent learning, simplify complex concepts, and develop problem-solving skills. However, education experts caution that success will hinge on investment in electricity, internet access, and teacher training. Without that infrastructure, they warn, rural and underserved schools could fall further behind better-resourced urban areas, potentially widening existing educational inequalities rather than closing them.
