Ghana’s President John Mahama has announced that the country plans to ban exports of raw mineral ores from 2030. The proposed ban is part of a broader push to expand domestic processing in Ghana so the country can derive more value from its natural resources than would be possible if it only exported them in minimally processed form. Ghana is Africa’s largest gold producer and also mines manganese, bauxite, and diamonds. Mahama said investors must understand that access to the country’s resources will come with processing obligations. The policy fits a broader trend among African resource-producing countries seeking to retain more benefits from mineral wealth. Ghana’s planned restrictions would place it alongside countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo, which already limits exports of copper and cobalt concentrates.
