Ghana’s President John Mahama has placed a ban on non-essential travel for government officials in a bid to reduce government expenditure amid the nation’s economic challenges. Mahama announced this directive during the recent swearing-in of 17 new cabinet ministers in Accra. He stated that only essential travel, pre-approved by the office of the chief of staff, will be permitted during his administration, emphasizing that these trips must be taken in modesty.  Mahama implored officials to avoid extravagance, emphasizing that government resources should be channeled toward improving Ghanaian lives and not luxury. He also disclosed that an audit of state resource use by previous administrations will soon be completed and that those found guilty of misappropriating public funds will face the weight of the law. According to observers, Mahama’s move to ban non-essential travel and first class trips demonstrates his government’s commitment to responsible fiscal management.
