Ghana is hosting a conference in Accra to build momentum behind a landmark UN resolution declaring the transatlantic slave trade the gravest crime against humanity. The gathering, the first major event since the resolution’s adoption, brings together heads of state, historians, and civil society leaders from more than 80 countries. Participants will discuss frameworks for implementing the resolution, establishing global reparations panels, and promoting restitution efforts. The UN resolution, proposed by Ghana on behalf of African Union states, passed in March with 123 countries in favor, while the US, Israel, and Argentina opposed it. Organizers say the conference marks a pivotal moment, building on decades of fragmented reparations efforts, including the 1993 Abuja Proclamation, as global institutions—from France to the Vatican—increasingly acknowledge historical responsibility for slavery’s legacy.
