Ghana has announced plans to apply for membership in BRICS, the bloc of emerging economies led by China, India, and Brazil. Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa announced the decision in Accra during a visit by India’s external affairs minister. According to Ablakwa, membership of the bloc would mean more opportunities for trade, investment, and development. He, however, emphasized that Ghana’s decision is not an attempt to replace ties with Western partners. Ghana also wants partnerships that help process its natural resources domestically rather than relying on exports of raw materials. Accra has already sought New Delhi’s support for its application. The Indian minister expressed support for Ghana’s aspirations but noted that membership requires consideration by the wider bloc. If admitted, Ghana would become Africa’s fourth full BRICS member, joining South Africa, Egypt, and Ethiopia.
