Ghana Secures Russian Partnership for Aluminum Industry
Russian aluminum producer Rusal has agreed to partner with Ghana’s state-owned Ghana Integrated Aluminum Development Corporation (GIADEC) to develop bauxite mining and alumina production projects at the Nyinahin deposit in southwestern Ghana. Announced during a summit between Russian President Vladimir Putin and African leaders in Moscow, the agreement will establish two joint ventures in which Rusal will hold majority stakes. The projects will include a bauxite mine with an annual production capacity of up to 5 million metric tons and an alumina refinery capable of processing 1.2 million metric tons annually. The targeted deposit contains more than 100 million metric tons of estimated bauxite resources. Rusal said the partnership would support its raw material requirements. The company is seeking to secure its own alumina supplies after losing about 40% of its supplies from Ukraine and Australia in 2022. Ghana expects the development to attract investment, create thousands of jobs, and strengthen domestic aluminum processing.
