Ghana has agreed to accept West Africans deported from the United States, joining a growing list of African nations cooperating with Washington’s immigration crackdown. President John Mahama confirmed that 14 deportees, including several Nigerians and a Gambian, had already arrived, with arrangements ongoing to return them to their home countries. He justified the move under ECOWAS’s free movement protocol, which allows citizens to enter and reside across the region without visas. The agreement comes amid tensions in Ghana-US relations, marked by higher tariffs on Ghanaian exports and visa restrictions. However, while Mahama acknowledged the strained ties, he insisted relations between Accra and Washington remain positive. Meanwhile, some African nations, including Nigeria, have resisted US pressure to agree to similar deportation deals.
