Ghana’s Genser Energy Secures Financing for Expansion

By Semafor·Edited by Editor TO·

Genser Energy, a Ghanaian gas-power company, has secured a $527 million credit facility from three South African banks—FirstRand, Absa, and Standard Bank—to fund expansion across West Africa. The firm, which operates eight power plants in Ghana and Burkina Faso and a 270-mile gas pipeline, plans to use the funds to upgrade its gas turbine plants, prepare an under-construction gas processing facility for launch, and construct a 470-megawatt project in Côte d’Ivoire. The company also intends to raise another $350 million through an equity sale later this month, although some of that will be used to reduce its debt. Genser’s expansion comes as governments across Africa seek to bridge the continent’s electricity gap. Currently, 600 million people across Africa lack access to electricity.
