Ghana is launching an ambitious crackdown on gold smuggling, targeting 127 tons of artisanal production annually—worth over $20 billion—under sweeping new reforms. The push comes after the nation lost an estimated $11.4 billion to illegal exports between 2019 and 2023, with undeclared gold flooding into hubs like Dubai. Starting next month, the newly established Ghana Gold Board will purchase a minimum of 2.45 tons per week from small-scale miners, offering spot market prices and bonuses to incentivize formal sales. All foreign exchange from the program will flow directly to the central bank, bolstering national reserves. With environmental traceability systems and local refining expansion in the works, Ghana is determined to ensure its golden bounty finally benefits its own economy.
