Ghana’s mining sector undergoes bold reforms, focusing on sustainable gold extraction and economic growth.

Ghana is set to introduce major reforms to its mining laws, the most sweeping in nearly 20 years, aimed at tightening license terms and boosting direct investment in local communities. Under the proposed changes, automatic license renewals will be scrapped, mining lease durations shortened, and companies that do not meet their environmental or social obligations will lose renewal rights. Crucially, companies must now allocate a portion of gross mineral sales directly to community development, replacing older centralized funding models. The overhaul, which is already 85% complete, also includes a new medium-scale license tier for miners that are neither artisanal nor large. Furthermore, there are plans to limit long-term tax stability agreements. With gold output expected to hit 5.1 million ounces this year, Ghana’s mining reforms signal a bolder, fairer future for its mining sector.
