Google Tops $1 Billion in Africa Investments

Google has now exceeded its $1 billion investment commitment to Africa following the launch of new initiatives aimed at expanding digital infrastructure, connectivity, and artificial intelligence development across the continent. Announced at the inaugural Africa Cloud Summit in Johannesburg, the projects include a connectivity hub in South Africa’s Eastern Cape that will link Africa to Australia and India through new subsea cable routes. Other announcements include Africa’s first applied AI lab in Ghana, a training program with actor Idris Elba’s Akuna Group focused on AI-driven storytelling, and a digital innovation center in Soweto. Google also confirmed its startup accelerator will support 15 more South African companies as part of a broader pledge to back 50 African ventures by 2028. The company says these initiatives reflect its long-term commitment to strengthening Africa’s digital economy and unlocking opportunities created by artificial intelligence.
