Rwandan YouTuber Rashid Hakuzimana has been sentenced to seven years in prison for charges including genocide denial, inciting ethnic division, and spreading false information. Arrested in 2021, Hakuzimana denied the accusations, claiming his criticism of President Paul Kagame’s government in his YouTube videos was the real reason for his arrest. Rwandan law criminalizes denying or downplaying the 1994 genocide, in which 800,000 people were killed. The judge said Hakuzimana’s remarks, such as claims that genocide orphans were neglected compared to officials’ children, fueled division. The YouTuber, who has a large following on his channel, represented himself in court. He, however, refused to defend his actions, insisting on being addressed as a politician rather than a YouTuber. Having already served three years in jail, he will spend an additional four years behind bars and pay a $700 fine.
