Government Forces Capture Tigray’s Capital

By Reuters·Edited by Editor TO·

Pro-government forces have regained control of Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia’s Tigray region, dealing a major setback to the opposition alliance led by the Tigray People’s Liberation Front. A pro-government militia announced the takeover, and a humanitarian source and a local resident confirmed the city is under government control. The TPLF acknowledged that it had withdrawn from Mekelle and said the regional government would temporarily operate from another location. The capture follows a major offensive launched by the TPLF on September 23 and marks a sharp escalation in fighting reminiscent of Ethiopia’s 2020–2022 civil war. The conflict is also raising fears of a broader regional confrontation. Addis Ababa has accused Eritrea, Sudan, and Egypt of supporting the rebel alliance, although all three have denied involvement.
