Guinea’s media regulator has officially banned French media company France 24 from broadcasting in the country over its description of President Mamady Doumbouya during a recent broadcast. The High Authority for Communication accused the channel of using the term “putschist president,” referring to Doumbouya’s seizure of power in a 2021 military coup before his election as president in December 2025. The regulator said continuing to describe him as a coup leader ignores his ballot-box legitimacy. The ban adds to growing pressure on international media operating in Guinea, where authorities have increasingly asserted control over news coverage. For the government, regulatory action provides another instrument to shape how its political transition is portrayed. For France 24 and other international outlets, the episode creates greater uncertainty over their ability to report independently from the country.
