Guinea-Bissau is moving toward a possible delay of presidential and legislative elections scheduled for December 6 after the National Electoral Commission said the conditions needed to hold the vote would not be met by the deadline. The election was intended to restore civilian rule after a year of military rule, with the junta having seized power in November 2025. Prime Minister Ilídio Vieira Té said credible elections could not be held because political parties were not yet prepared to contest them. He also argued that the leadership of many political parties needs to be renewed. However, the postponement would extend military-led rule beyond the original timetable. The medium-term stakes are substantial: delaying the election could weaken confidence in the transition, deepen political uncertainty, and reinforce the military’s role in Guinea-Bissau’s governance.
