Haitian Police Commanders Visit Kenya Ahead of UN-backed Peacekeeping Mission

Haitian police commanders met with Kenya’s Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, in Nairobi on Tuesday, in preparation for a UN-backed multinational peacekeeping mission to combat gang violence in Port-au-Prince, Haiti’s capital. The mission, led by Kenya, will hope to quell the violence that has claimed thousands of lives and displaced over 360,000 people since it began in 2021. Joachim Prohete, a Haitian police official, expressed reliance on Kenya’s support, while Koome assured commitment to assist. Kenya is deploying 1000 police officers to the mission that will also include police officers from Benin, Jamaica, Guyana, the Bahamas, and others. Kenya will also provide training to visiting commanders examining the barracks where the drills are scheduled to take place. The peacekeeping mission was originally scheduled to take place in May but was postponed to complete base preparations and procure essential equipment for the incoming force.
