In a rural village in southern Uganda, a Harry Potter-inspired sport is fueling big dreams and stronger community ties. What began in 2013 when teacher John Ssentamu discovered Quidditch in the popular book series has grown into a thriving quadball team at Good Shepherd Primary School, where players race through banana-tree clearings with sticks between their legs in place of broomsticks. The adapted game blends elements of football, netball, rugby, and volleyball, while promoting gender equality on every team. After a decade of dedication, the group won Uganda’s first national quadball tournament in 2023, helping the sport spread to more than 200 players nationwide. Though limited funding has kept them from the World Cup, the game has energized local youth and boosted school attendance.
