Africa’s ‘Big 5’ wealth markets — South Africa, Egypt, Nigeria, Kenya, and Morocco — account for 56% of its millionaires and over 90% of its billionaires. Some of these high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs) have navigated economic downturns and political instability to hold on to their wealth, demonstrating remarkable grit and determination. At 92, Nathan Kirsh is Africa’s oldest billionaire, with a fortune of $7.0 billion from retail and real estate in Eswatini. He ranks 407th globally among billionaires. Othman Benjelloun, 91, is the second oldest billionaire, with a net worth of $1.5 billion from banking and insurance in Morocco. The third oldest, Christoffel Wiese, 82, has a net worth of $1.3 billion from the retail sector in South Africa. Algeria’s Issad Rebrab & family and South Africa’s Nicky Oppenheimer & family occupy the fourth and fifth positions aged 80 and 79 respectively.
