Shipping containers from China at an African port highlight trade and economic ties.
China’s exports to Africa surged past $100 billion in the first half of 2025, highlighting the continent’s growing role as a major market for machinery, vehicles, electronics, and industrial goods. Nigeria, South Africa, and Egypt together absorbed about a third of these shipments, driven by booming infrastructure projects and rising consumer demand. At the same time, smaller economies such as Guinea, Angola, Malawi, and Mali posted rapid import growth, signaling a broader shift in Africa’s trade landscape. Construction equipment shipments jumped sharply, while car exports more than doubled, reflecting accelerating urbanization and industrialization. Although new tariff openings with China and the revival of AGOA offer opportunities, structural challenges in finance and regulation could still shape how Africa captures long-term trade benefits.
