Music emerged as an important storytelling element at Lagos Fashion Week SS27, with designers using soundtracks to reinforce the cultural references and creative identities behind their collections. Several presentations incorporated older African musical traditions, while others explored contemporary Afrobeats, electronic music, and international underground sounds. Dimeji Ilori paired Yoruba-inspired designs with Man Paulo’s “Yoruba War Tongues,” linking his collection to their heritage. Pepper Row combined Fela Kuti’s “Shakara (Oloje)” with Simi’s “Woman” for his looks. Other designers explored continental influences, including Saharan Tuareg rock, South African amapiano, and Malian music. Pettre Taylor, for instance, incorporated tracks by Tinariwen and Imarhan, while Irapada Circular Design Initiative moved between Oscar Mbo and Amadou & Mariam. Meanwhile, Hertunba, Ajanée, and Studio Imo embraced electronic and club-inspired sounds. Collectively, the selections demonstrated how music can deepen fashion’s cultural storytelling and connect African creative traditions with global influences.
