Sustainable investing is gaining traction globally, and South Africa is no exception—though it faces unique challenges. Since 2011, South Africa’s pension fund reforms have required environmental, social, and governance (ESG) criteria in investment decisions, pushing asset managers to prioritize issues like human rights and stakeholder relationships. In fact, a recent study found that most South African asset managers believe companies should adopt sound sustainability practices. However, progress has been slower than in other regions due to a shrinking equity market, low client demand for green products, and inconsistent sustainability metrics. Additionally, global ESG frameworks often overlook local contexts like Black Economic Empowerment. To accelerate impact, experts recommend better education, standardized reporting, and country-specific metrics. With vast capital at their disposal, South African investors have the potential to drive meaningful change in tackling poverty, inequality, and climate change—if they can overcome these barriers.
