Boda bodas, Uganda’s popular motorcycles, are major polluters, contributing to air pollution that causes diseases like lung cancer, asthma, and heart disease. A new study has shown that switching to electric boda bodas could reduce air pollution-related deaths by 18%. The transition to electric bikes would also cut costs for drivers and reduce Uganda’s reliance on petrol, resulting in a reduction in the amount spent on importing fossil fuels. While the government has supported electrification through initiatives like electric buses and charging stations, challenges such as high upfront costs, lack of charging infrastructure, and limited awareness hinder the transition. With collaboration and policy support, Uganda could encourage Ugandans to switch from petrol-powered boda bodas to electric boda bodas, leading to improved air quality, job creation, and a sustainable transport system.
