Mukesh Ambani, Asia’s richest man, is making a foray into the African telecom market in a move that will see India counter China’s growing influence on the continent. Ambani’s Reliance Industries Ltd., through its subsidiary Radisys Corp., will provide crucial network infrastructure, applications, and smartphones for Next-Gen InfraCo (NGIC), a telecom firm based in Ghana. NGIC, which plans to begin operations by the end of the year, secured exclusive rights to offer 5G services in Ghana for, at the very least, 10 years. The cost of building 5G infrastructure is steep, with NGIC’s capital expenditure for the first three years projected at $145 million. However, it’s exclusive license, technological expertise, and strategic partners, including Microsoft Corp and Ambani’s Radisys Corp, make the project feasible than it would otherwise have been.
