Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi arrived in Israel for a two-day visit, marking the first official trip by a leader from the self-declared republic. During the visit, Abdullahi was scheduled to formally open the breakaway region’s embassy in Jerusalem and hold meetings with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Saar. Israeli President Isaac Herzog, who welcomed Abdullahi, described the visit as embodying the “enormous potential” of the emerging partnership between the two countries. Israel became the first country to recognize Somaliland as an independent state in late 2025, a decision that drew criticism from Somalia and several international observers. Somaliland has operated as a de facto independent territory since declaring separation from Somalia in 1991 but has struggled to gain broad international recognition. The visit highlights deepening diplomatic ties while raising fresh questions about sovereignty, regional politics, and recognition in the Horn of Africa.
