Kenya’s parliament has approved the 2025 finance law but struck down a controversial proposal to grant the revenue authority unrestricted access to taxpayers’ personal data. Lawmakers cited constitutional privacy protections, saying current laws already allow access with a court warrant. The decision follows public backlash and aims to prevent unrest like last year’s deadly tax hike protests. The new law, part of a $33 billion budget, seeks to raise an additional $233 million mainly through improved tax compliance. With the finance law now passed by acclamation, all eyes are on President Ruto as he prepares to give his final assent and steer Kenya’s fiscal agenda forward.
