Kenya’s Ruth Chepngetich broke the women’s marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon on Sunday, finishing in 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 57 seconds. Chepngetich beat the previous record set by Ethiopia’s Tigst Assefa at the 2023 Berlin Marathon by nearly two minutes, becoming the first woman to run a marathon in under 2 hours and 10 minutes. Chepngetich, the 2019 world marathon champion, expressed pride in achieving the record, stating it was a lifelong dream realized. She had come close to breaking the world record in 2022. However, she missed her compatriot Brigid Kosgei’s then-world record by 14 seconds. This victory marks her third Chicago Marathon win, which has seen four of the five fastest women’s marathon times in the past six years.
