South Sudan President Salva Kiir has appointed his son, Major General Atem Salva Kiir, to command the Tiger Division, an elite military formation responsible for protecting senior state officials. Atem, 36, previously commanded a special forces unit within the National Security Service and was promoted from brigadier general to major general before taking the new position. The appointment comes as South Sudan prepares for elections scheduled for December 2026 and continues to manage unresolved political tensions surrounding its peace process. The military says Atem’s selection followed established command procedures and was not based on his family connection to the president. Nevertheless, the appointment gives one of Kiir’s children direct control over a strategically important security institution at a politically sensitive moment.
