South Africa’s Minister of International Relations, Ronald Lamola, has denied prior knowledge that M23 rebels would attend the Thabo Mbeki Foundation’s African Peace and Security Dialogue in Magaliesburg, where he delivered a keynote speech. The presence of M23 representatives sparked protests by Congolese nationals and prompted the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) government to boycott the event. Rebel spokesperson Lawrence Kanyuka described his mission in South Africa as one of peace and criticized Kinshasa for refusing dialogue. Lamola emphasized that his department had not vetted the guest list. Nevertheless, he defended the need for African-led solutions to conflicts on the continent. Meanwhile, tensions escalated further as M23 recaptured Shoa in North Kivu after renewed battles with government forces, highlighting the fragile and ongoing nature of the conflict.
