Malawi has launched a nationwide crackdown on fuel hoarding and illegal resellers as persistent shortages disrupt transport and commerce. Diesel and gasoline have become increasingly scarce because the country lacks sufficient foreign currency to pay for imports. The situation has sent pump prices soaring to above $3 per liter, placing additional pressure on consumers and businesses. This has resulted in truckers facing queues lasting up to a week and bus fares almost doubling on some routes. Authorities warn that unlicensed fuel sellers face arrest and service stations caught hoarding supplies risk losing their licenses. The government has also turned to the International Monetary Fund for a bailout to help with its finances.
