Mali’s ruling junta is facing fresh internal unrest as dozens of soldiers have reportedly been arrested over an alleged coup plot. According to military and transitional council sources, somewhere between 20 and 50 soldiers were detained in recent days for allegedly seeking to overthrow the government. High-profile figures like Gen. Abass Dembélé and Gen. Nema Sagara were initially named among those detained. However, a source close to Dembélé has since stated that neither of the generals was detained. The arrests, unconfirmed by authorities, come amid growing political tensions, including the jailing of former Prime Minister Moussa Mara and the junta’s dissolution of political parties. The turmoil unfolds as jihadist insurgents gain ground in the north, despite Russian military support.
