A French national accused of participating in a plot to destabilize Mali’s military-led government has been sentenced to 20 years in prison, further straining relations between Bamako and Paris. Yann Vezilier, whose arrest was announced last August alongside two Malian generals, was accused of acting on behalf of French intelligence to mobilize political, civil society, and military figures against President Assimi Goita’s government. French authorities have consistently denied the allegations, arguing that Vezilier was engaged in a legitimate security cooperation mission and that his detention violated international diplomatic norms. French officials have also expressed concern about his deteriorating health. The case reflects a sharp deterioration in French-Malian relations, part of a wider regional realignment that has also seen Burkina Faso and Niger distance themselves from their former colonial ruler.
