Leaders from Mali and Russia discuss nuclear energy cooperation in a grand, ornate room.
Mali has deepened its alliance with Russia through a new deal on the peaceful use of nuclear energy during interim President Assimi Goïta’s five-day visit to Moscow. The agreement, one of several signed, highlights a growing partnership between the two nations, including plans for broader economic, scientific, and technical cooperation. President Putin praised the upward trend in trade and hinted at future collaboration in energy, logistics, and humanitarian projects. Goïta called the ties “effective and trustworthy,” reinforcing Mali’s pivot towards Moscow. The Malian leader’s visit comes after the departure of the Wagner Group from his country. The Russian paramilitary body had helped combat jihadist violence but has since been replaced by Russia’s state-backed Africa Corps.
