Mauritius has imposed an extended overnight curfew after protests over water shortages and the rising cost of living escalated into the island’s worst riots in decades. The unrest intensified after a woman was shot and wounded by police at a roadblock; the officer involved has been arrested. Authorities report at least 94 arrests, including 16 minors, while vandalism, looting, and attacks on public infrastructure have injured seven police officers. Prime Minister Navin Ramgoolam’s government has extended restrictions, suspended school classes, and warned that some detainees could face prosecution under terrorism laws. Officials are also considering lowering the minimum age for detention and prosecution from 14 to 12. The crisis threatens public confidence, disrupts economic activity, and tests the government’s ability to address essential-service failures without deepening public anger.
