South African fashion label Maxhosa Africa has made history as the first South African brand to stage a full runway show on Paris Fashion Week’s official calendar. The brand, which presented a pan-African collection, used the opportunity to showcase Africa’s diversity and ambition for its textile industry. The show was heavily influenced by African tradition and culture, featuring a woven catwalk of straw mats, vivid geometric knitwear, pleated skirts, and bright streetwear. The geometric knitwear was largely inspired by Xhosa beadwork, although creative director Laduma Ngxokolo admitted there were other influences. The label produces all of its clothes in South Africa, while also sourcing its wool from the country.
