The fearless spirit of South African music legend Miriam Makeba, known as “Mama Africa,” comes alive in Mimi’s Shebeen, a bold dance-theater piece by choreographer Alesandra Seutin. Blending dance, live music, and spoken word, the show celebrates Makeba’s extraordinary journey and powerful story—from her mother’s arrest when she was an infant to her decades in exile for opposing apartheid. Featuring South African singer Tutu Puoane, the performance channels Makeba’s grace, resilience, and activism while exploring themes of displacement and identity. Inspired by her mother’s love for Makeba, Seutin transforms the shebeen—a symbol of defiance and community—into a vibrant ritual of remembrance, reminding new generations of Mama Africa’s courage, artistry, and unwavering truth.
