Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service has officially launched in Somalia, marking another step in its expansion across Africa. Somalia is the third African country to authorize Starlink in 2025, following Niger and Liberia in March and January. The service was launched in Mogadishu, with government officials and Starlink representatives in attendance. While Somalia has access to undersea cables, Starlink’s satellite service provides an opportunity to improve the country’s internet access, particularly in remote and underserved regions. Despite Starlink’s continued expansion, it has faced its fair share of challenges. Notably, the company has been unable to secure an operational license in South Africa, the continent’s most developed economy.
